New 'Thor: Ragnarok' Concept Art Strengthens Ties to 'Planet Hulk' Comic Book
Bruce Banner’s stronger, angrier self taking on a cosmic-powered hero in a gladiatorial arena? Where has that happened before?
Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk might not be getting a solo movie anytime soon, but newly released concept art from November’s Thor: Ragnarok suggests that it might just be the movie version of the comic book “Planet Hulk” storyline that fans have been wishing for, after all.
Images available on the Doctor Strange home release — first pointed out online by the Spoiler Free Movie Sleuth site — show Ragnarok concept art featuring Cate Blanchett’s Hela and, more interestingly, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor having to deal with an axe-wielding Hulk in front of a massive crowd:
While Thor didn’t show up in the “Planet Hulk” storyline, the Hulk did face off against another cosmically powered Marvel superhero in the 2006 comic book storyline — the Silver Surfer, whose movie rights belong to Fox as part of the Fantastic Four deal.
Given that Ragnarok is more likely to lean into Asgardian mischief — or perhaps the ongoing lead-up to next year’s Avengers: Infinity War — than offer up the “Planet Hulk” denouement of the Hulk taking over an alien planet, it’ll be interesting to see just how much of the fan-favorite storyline ends up in the next Thor movie … and also how much of what is billed as a solo Thor movie turns out to be a two-hander with Ruffalo’s bright green alter-ego.
Thor: Ragnarok is set to be released Nov. 3.
